In Cod We Trust
Newfoundland was built on cod.
For over a century, the cod fishing industry shaped the identity, economy, and rhythm of life in Newfoundland. But with decades of overfishing and unsustainable practices, the sudden imposition of the cod moratorium in 1992 halted not just the industry — it shook the foundation of the entire province.
The designs in this collection are rooted in the craftsmanship of punt boats: simple, sturdy vessels built with intention. Each garment is designed and crafted with form and function in mind and is perfect for the ‘urban explorer’. Painting and embroidery are used in this collection to depict and celebrate Newfoundland scenery as well as the process of making salt cod, an integral part of the cod fishing industry.
This collection, in cod we trust, draws inspiration from the cod moratorium — not as an end, but as a moment of transformation. It speaks to the resilience of Newfoundland’s people and how the communities supported one another. By taking shapes, structures, and motifs from the cod fishing industry and reimagining them, the collection honors tradition while transforming it into something new.
Sustainability is inseparable from concept. This collection embraces a commitment to the environment through the use of familiar, sustainable fabrics sush as denim and sustainable recycled nylon.
